UNDERSTANDING DETOX
What Is Medically Supervised Detox — and Why Does It Matter?
Medical detox is the clinical process of clearing substances from your body while a trained medical team monitors and manages withdrawal symptoms around the clock. For most substances, this is not just about comfort; it is about safety. Alcohol and benzodiazepine withdrawal can produce life-threatening seizures and cardiac events if left unmanaged. Opioid withdrawal, while rarely fatal, causes severe physical distress so overwhelming that the majority of people who attempt to stop without help return to use within hours.
Our medical team uses evidence-based medication protocols to maintain stable vital signs, minimize discomfort, and address complications as they arise. Detox at Skyward is not “white-knuckling it in a clinical room.” It is attentive, individualized medical care: the kind that gives your body the gentlest possible entry into recovery.
Detox vs. MAT: A Critical Distinction
Detox
Short-term, medically managed withdrawal. Goal: safely stop using substances. Duration: days to weeks, depending on the substance.
Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)
Long-term use of FDA-approved medications (Suboxone, Vivitrol) as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for opioid or alcohol use disorder. Different from detox, though detox may initiate MAT medications.
Not sure which you need?

SUBSTANCE-SPECIFIC PROTOCOLS
Substances We Treat During Medical Detox
Each substance produces a distinct withdrawal profile requiring a different clinical approach. The overview below outlines our protocols. For substance-specific details, visit the substances section of our site.
Alcohol
Timeline: 5–10 days
Alcohol withdrawal carries the highest risk of any substance, including seizures and delirium tremens (DTs), a potentially fatal syndrome of confusion, fever, and cardiovascular instability. Skyward’s protocol includes a benzodiazepine taper (Valium or Librium), IV thiamine to prevent Wernicke’s encephalopathy, IV fluids, and continuous vital sign monitoring. No one should attempt alcohol detox unsupervised.
Opioids (Fentanyl, Heroin, Painkillers)
Timeline: 7–14 days
Opioid withdrawal is rarely life-threatening but is extraordinarily uncomfortable, with flu-like symptoms, bone pain, vomiting, and insomnia so severe that relapse is the norm without medical support. Skyward initiates buprenorphine (Suboxone) during the detox phase to dramatically reduce withdrawal severity, with clonidine added for blood pressure management and additional symptom relief.
Benzodiazepines (Xanax, Valium, Klonopin)
Timeline: Weeks to months
Benzo withdrawal is among the most dangerous of all substances and must never be attempted abruptly. Seizures can occur days after the last dose. Skyward’s approach involves a gradual taper — often cross-tapering to a longer-acting agent like diazepam — managed over weeks or months based on the duration and dose of prior use.
Stimulants (Cocaine, Methamphetamine)
Timeline: 1–2 weeks acute phase
No FDA-approved medications exist for stimulant withdrawal, but that doesn’t mean detox should be unmonitored. Stimulant cessation can cause profound depression, cardiac arrhythmias, and intense psychological cravings. Our team provides continuous monitoring, psychiatric evaluation, and supportive care to manage these risks safely.
THE PROCESS
What to Expect During Detox at Skyward Treatment
Fear of the unknown is real. Here is exactly what happens from the moment you call us to the moment you transition into the next phase of your recovery.
1. Arrival & Comprehensive Assessment
Same-day intake is available for most patients. Upon arrival, our medical team conducts a thorough assessment: vital signs, substance use and medical history, psychiatric screening, and insurance verification. This assessment drives your individualized treatment plan, where no two protocols are identical.
Your medical team establishes a baseline and initiates appropriate medications. Nursing staff monitors vital signs continuously. You’re settled into a comfortable private or semi-private room with nutritious meals prepared by our in-house chef. The focus in this phase is safety and getting ahead of symptoms before they peak.
3.Active Detox
Medication protocols are adjusted daily as symptoms evolve. Daily physician rounds and regular nursing check-ins ensure your care is responsive, not reactive. Hydration, nutrition, and rest are prioritized. For many patients, this is the hardest stretch, and the one where having a dedicated medical team makes the most meaningful difference.
4. Transition to Treatment
As withdrawal symptoms stabilize, your clinical team completes a full level-of-care assessment and begins transition planning. Whether the next step is residential treatment, PHP, or intensive outpatient, the handoff is seamless, meaning there is no gap in support, no waiting period, and no starting over.
A Word of Honest Reassurance
We won’t tell you detox is painless. We will tell you that our medical team’s job, their entire focus during your stay, is to make withdrawal as safe and as manageable as medically possible.
The patients who walk through our doors the most frightened often tell us, once they’re through the other side, that it was nothing as they expected. Not easy — but survivable. And worth every hour.

COMMON QUESTIONS
Frequently Asked Questions About Medical Detox
Duration depends primarily on the substance and individual factors like duration of use, daily quantity, and overall health. Alcohol withdrawal typically resolves in 5–10 days. Opioid withdrawal stabilizes over 7–14 days. Benzodiazepine taper can extend over weeks to months, depending on the dose and duration of use. Your clinical team will give you a personalized estimate during the initial assessment.
Uncomfortable at times; honestly, yes. But our medical team's job is to keep you as safe and symptom-managed as possible. With appropriate medications, most patients describe their experience as markedly more bearable than what they feared. The withdrawal symptoms our team cannot eliminate, but they manage aggressively, so you are never left to suffer alone.
For alcohol and benzodiazepines, home detox is genuinely dangerous and can be fatal. Seizures can occur without warning in the 24–72 hour window after last use. For opioids, home detox is rarely fatal, but the severity of symptoms means the vast majority of people return to use within hours. Medical supervision is not just a comfort upgrade — for many substances, it is a safety requirement.
Protocols are substance-specific. Alcohol detox uses benzodiazepines to prevent seizures, plus thiamine supplementation and IV fluids. Opioid detox initiates buprenorphine (Suboxone) and may include clonidine for blood pressure and symptom control. Benzo detox requires a gradual taper, often with a cross-taper to a longer-acting agent. All patients receive anti-nausea medication, sleep support, and hydration management as needed.
Detox alone has a very high relapse rate. This is because it addresses the physical dependency but not the psychological and behavioral dimensions of addiction. At Skyward, your clinical team begins transition planning before detox ends. Most patients move seamlessly into residential treatment at the same facility or into our IOP program. No gap in care, no starting over.
